sqm-scripts: Fix a minor bug, add copyrights, improve logging

Changes committed to the cerowrt original repo after the initial import here:
- Better license & copyright statements, as requested
- Fixed a minor bug in stopping sqm
- Logging improvements
- Dead code removed
- Typos corrected
